In his excellent book “The Sirius Mystery“, Robert Temple offers the readers extensive research on the Dogon tribe, their fish-gods, and the tribe’s information regarding the Sirius star system. What follows here is merely a summary of this incredible story. Anyone interested in getting a deeper understanding of the Dogon tribe and its beliefs should read Temple’s book.
The Dogon people say that the Sirius star, a main star in the Sirius system, has a tiny, unseen companion star named after Digitaria seed, it is Sirius B. The most secret traditions of these people all concern the star Sirius B which they call after the tiniest seed known to them, for which the botanical name is Digitaria. The Dogon’s name for Digitaria is “Po.” They also say that there is a third star in this system, Sirius C, a red dwarf.
In 1995, two French astronomers published the results of many years’ studies regarding motions in the Sirius system and announced that a third, small star of a type known as a “red dwarf” seems to exist in the Sirius star system.
So, who are these people living in the land of Dogons? How could they have known so much about the Sirius star system for hundreds of years and especially about Sirius B, which is entirely unseen without a telescope and was photographed for the first time in 1970?!
To fully appreciate these peoples’ extraordinary astronomical wisdom, it is necessary to understand their lives and culture better.

The Dogon tribe lives in the relatively isolated mountainous region of Bandiagara, south of the Sahara Desert in Mali, West Africa. The nearest cities to them are Timbuctoo (Tombouctou), Ouagadougou and Bamako. Cliffs of Bandiagara protect architectural treasures in the form of houses, altars, sanctuaries, and toga – meeting places for the Dogon. These very old places have been for centuries connected with the tribe’s culture and tradition. The Dogon are illiterate, which means knowledge about their tradition, culture, and art is narrated from one generation to another.
Though they do not possess any modern astronomical equipment, the Dogon have advanced knowledge of astronomy. How is it possible?
It is important to emphasize that the Dogon’s life, culture, and religion are based on advanced star knowledge. Astronomy plays a central role in their society. It is not only the foundation of their faith, but just like in other ancient civilizations, it also offers the clue to the origin of their gods.
The Dogon have a very complex system of mythology, and their legends and myths are many centuries old.

Two French anthropologists Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen studied between 1931 and 1950 customs of this religious and mysterious tribe. After years of living with them, the scientists learned some secrets of Dogon’s religious traditions from their four head priests.
They learned how the Universe was created, according to the Dogons’ secret mythology, and how civilization emerged on our planet. The researchers also got an insight into the Sigui ceremony held every sixty years. This ceremony is very important as it represents the renewal of the Universe.
The priests said they received their astronomical knowledge from the “Nommos, a species, who landed on the Earth thousands of years ago.
